4 Japanese Companies Interested in Working on Airport Projects in Indonesia

Japanese companies have shown keen interest in contributing to the development and operation of airports in Indonesia, particularly Sultan Aji Muhammad Sepinggan Airport in Balikpapan. During the Air Transportation Working Group (ATWG) event held from January 18 to 20, 2024, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) shared that four Japanese companies—Japan Airport Terminal Co. Ltd, JALUX Inc., Taisei, and SECOM Co. Ltd—are eager to collaborate in this venture. These companies boast extensive experience in constructing and managing major airports in Japan, such as Haneda Airport and Narita Airport, along with international projects like Beijing International Airport in China and New Ulaanbaater Airport in Mongolia.

The aim of this collaboration is to enhance the functionality of Sultan Aji Muhammad Sepinggan Airport in Balikpapan, positioning it as a vital gateway to the archipelago’s capital city. Leveraging their Japanese expertise, technology, and experience, the companies hope to contribute to the growth of Indonesia’s aviation industry. Discussions during the ATWG event also covered Indonesia’s proposal to expand air routes to Japan, presentations on the State Safety Program, and updates on the utilization of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (BioAvtur) in Indonesia.

This collaborative effort is viewed as a valuable platform for exchanging ideas and experiences between the two countries. Lukman F.Laisa, the Airport Director of the Ministry of Transportation, expressed hope that the discussions would not only contribute to the advancement of aviation in both nations but also strengthen the diplomatic ties between Indonesia and Japan. The ATWG event is a part of the 11th Vice-Ministerial Level Meeting between Indonesia and Japan in the transportation sector, with representatives from both countries engaging in discussions to promote mutual benefits.
